The 5 oclock get up was definitely the hardest part of the day but luckily I managed to get a few extra hours of sleep on the mini bus. As soon as we got to The Port of Felixstowe, straight away we spotted the CSCL Globe ship. It was hard to miss it was as it was 400 meters long and the same weight as 14,500 buses, you could even hold up to 9,000 million tins of beans!!! |
It had made its maiden call at Felixstowe and this was the first port call of Europe. This vessel is the largest ship ever to be operated by
China Shipping, holding 18,000 containers – if they were all laid out they would stretch out for 72 miles. It was made by
Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

The boat had many different colours and different sized containers, there was a lot of
Evergreen and
“K” Line containers on the vessel. We all ran down to the sea to get a closer look at the ship, and were all amazed at how small the containers looked from a distance. The cranes picking them up made them look like little lego blocks. We all wanted to get a bit closer to the boat to see how long it actually was, as we could only see the front of the vessel, but unfortunately due to health and safety we could not.
I could never imagine the work that must go into organising the ports when a ship comes in. It is unbelievable how they had such a short space of time to offload the containers, because then the ship will move onto its next call at Rotterdam, then onto Hamburg, Zeebrugge, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian and Port Kelang.
