The Dangers Of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
20/10/2020
You’ve probably seen on the news and read in the papers about the dangers of faulty boilers and cookers that can cause fires, leaving devastating effects on families and homes. I thought it was important to raise awareness about how small safety checks can potentially save lives.
Carbon monoxide is known as ‘the silent killer’ as it is difficult to detect. It has no smell, taste or colour. This means you could be inhaling it without realising. Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels (i.e. gas, oil, coal and wood) are not burnt fully. This can happen particularly in enclosed spaces, where the oxygen is used and replaced with carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide leaks can start if your heaters, cookers and central heating boilers are installed incorrectly or are poorly maintained, along with poor ventilation systems. If you are fitting any of these appliances into your container conversion you must get a trained professional to fit them and ensure your items are brought from a reputable supplier. If you are thinking about fitting cookers or boilers into your container, we can fit apertures into to provide the correct ventilation. We can also fit carbon monoxide detectors into your containers.
Containers are also a great way to ensure that carbon monoxide leaks can stay outside of your house. For example, if you have wood chip burners you can have them containerised and kept away from your home, ensuring that if carbon monoxide was to leak then it would be away from your home. So if you start to feel dizziness, nausea, tiredness, confusion, stomach pain and shortness of breath, then make sure you get it checked out as carbon monoxide poisoning leads to around 40 deaths a year.
