Container Case Study

Compact 8ft Chemical Store

A London-based customer required a secure chemical store that met Environmental Agency and Health and Safety Executive standards. The customer’s space was limited, therefore a larger, more commonly manufactured chemical store would not have been suitable. An 8ft chemical store was perfect for the customer.

Specifications

In order to fabricate the 8ft chemical store container, our engineers took a 20ft shipping container and cut it down in length, retaining all of the corner castings. Whilst all of Lion’s standard shipping containers guarantee safe and secure storage, chemical storage units entail more advanced criteria in order that hazardous substances such as chemicals, flammables, pesticides and fertilisers do not harm humans, animals or the environment. Protection against unauthorised entry is also a necessity, in order than untrained personnel do not gain access and possibly hurt themselves. On this build, the door comes with a 10 point locking-system and Euro cylinder lock for maximum security.

In order to satisfy the requisite specifications, all of Lion’s chemical stores are ventilated sufficiently against toxic vapour and are fireproof. 300mm x 300mm aluminium louvres were fitted in this chemical store, positioned high and low on the 10ft elevations to create a ventilation flow within the unit.

Enhanced flooring is a key element of chemical store modification, in order that leakages do not cause avoidable harm. For this build, the original marine ply container floor was overlaid with 3mm flat steel. A raised bund was then fabricated to suit the capacity load the customer required. This bund consisted of a mesh floor with a durbar strip positioned in the centre to create a walkway. This mesh was secured with brackets. This modified flooring enables leakage to be emptied easily via a drain valve.

As with all of Lion’s storage containers, the chemical stores are wind and watertight and completely weatherproof.

For maximum usability, this 8ft chemical store container was fitted with heavy duty industrial longspan shelving across both sides, with galvanised plates installed across the length of the shelves. This durable shelving can hold up to 850KG – ideal for the customer’s requirements.

The final step of the build entailed ensuring that the exterior of the 8ft chemical store suited our customer’s aesthetic needs. The original exterior was sanded back, masked where necessary, primed then painted to the customer’s choice of colour: RAL 6028.
