Caerphilly

Container Case Study

Shipping Container Market

Caerffili, located in the Rhymney Valley just 7 miles from the Welsh capital of Cardiff, now boasts a 33 unit multi-storey shipping container market. An array of local businesses, including a selection of eateries, bars and vendors, now serve their customers from their own custom converted shipping container.

Projects such as Ffos Caerffili offer retail spaces to local business at rates which are often more competitive than traditional town-centre buildings. By providing these customer-facing spaces to small businesses, the shipping container markets improve employment opportunities in the area and increase footfall in the town which in turn boosts the local economy.

Habits of the average shopper in the UK now show a striking lean towards supporting small-to-medium local businesses, so long as this option is budget-friendly; shipping container markets such as Ffos Caerffili make it possible for retailers to serve this growing demand.

Specifications

When the client first contacted Lion Containers with preliminary plans for a shipping container market, it soon became apparent that this would be an ambitious build. 33 units would be required in total, all of which would need to be converted to either retail spaces or offices. The project is two-storeys, with platforms on the top floor containers for extra space.

Given the commercial use of these converted containers, specific U-Value requirements had to be met, meaning thicker insulation was needed across many of the units. This needed to be achieved to a standard that satisfied both building control and the architect’s approved designs.

The client specified that all office units were to have carpet floors and plasterboard finish, whilst the retail units were to be fitted with vinyl flooring.

As well as plug-and-go technology which powers converted containers, specific plumbing specifications needed to be installed to satisfy hygiene requirements and provide retailers with the necessary amenities.

All specifications were achieved to the highest industry standard, thus enabling Ffos Caerffili to launch just before the busy Summer trade began.
