Container Case Study
Lion Containers had previously converted a series of four shipping containers for a returning customer and linked them to create two units to be used as radiation detection rooms.
This time, the customer wanted a radiation monitoring room on their premises. For this, the container required various modifications. It was lined internally with a 9mm MFC finish. The floor was overlaid with Polysafe 2.5mm vinyl floor which is slip resistant. One of the key client requirements of the modification was the installation of an equipment table weighing 7200kgs. For the flooring to withstand that weight, the floor covering was fit with a steel plate.
The customer requested the installation of a 1894mm x 2065mm security double personnel door. The cargo door was removed and panelled in. For security reasons, the radiation monitoring room required the highest specification, a SR5 door. This was essential to protect against unauthorised access and lock tampering. Only trained personnel with keys can access the container.
All the electric cables and outlets were installed in accordance with the IEE regulations and the drawings supplied by the customer. The project utilised a TT electrical system with flush-fitting sockets. A surge protection device was installed to protect against lighting strikes. Motion sensors, anti-corrosive lights, smoke detection alarm and emergency lighting were also fitted. In addition, the customer required an air conditioner to maintain the temperature of 21 degrees inside the container.
The final step of the modification was the exterior of the container. It was painted with the customer’s choice of colour: RAL 7015.
Once the modifications were done, the container was then delivered to the customer’s location in Warrington. The equipment table was fitted and then delivered by us to the final site, The Met Office in Camborne. The whole unit in the end weighed 14 tonnes. Due to the heavy weight of the container, a contract lift was used to safely offload it onsite.
